Family Sponsorship Consultant in Surrey, BC

Family is at the centre of life in Surrey. Many people here came to Canada with a dream of building a better future, and that dream isn’t complete until the people they love can share it. Whether it’s a spouse overseas, a child still waiting back home, or a relative who has no one else, bringing your family to Canada is one of the most important steps you’ll take.

Family sponsorship can also be one of the most emotional and confusing immigration processes. Each type of sponsorship has its own rules, forms, and financial promises. Processing times can be long, and some programs have changed or paused. A small mistake can delay your reunion by months, or even lead to a refusal.

At Captain Consultants Ltd., we help families in Surrey understand their options and prepare complete, honest sponsorship applications. Our licensed Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) guides you through every step with care, patience, and clear advice.

Challenges Families Face in Surrey

These are the concerns we hear most often from families in our community:

  • “I don’t know who I’m allowed to sponsor.” The rules on which relatives qualify are strict and often misunderstood.
  • “My child is over 18. Can they still come?” Whether an older child counts as dependent depends on their age and situation.
  • “I want to bring my parents permanently.” The Parents and Grandparents Program is no longer accepting new applications, so families need other options.
  • “My documents don’t match.” Different spellings of names, birth dates, or missing records from back home can create problems.
  • “I was sponsored myself.” Some sponsors aren’t allowed to sponsor again for a certain period.
  • “What am I promising financially?” Every sponsor signs a legal promise to support their family member for a number of years.

Who You Can Sponsor

Spouses and Partners

You can sponsor your husband, wife, common-law partner, or conjugal partner. This is the most common type of family sponsorship. Learn more on our Spousal Sponsorship page.

Dependent Children

You can sponsor your own or adopted children if they’re under 22 and not married or in a common-law relationship. Children aged 22 or older may still qualify if they’ve depended on you financially since before age 22 because of a physical or mental condition.

Adopted Children

You may be able to sponsor a child you’ve adopted, or plan to adopt, from outside Canada. International adoption has extra steps, and we help you understand them.

Orphaned Relatives

You may be able to sponsor an orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild who’s under 18 and not married or in a common-law relationship.

Other Relatives in Special Cases

If you have no living spouse, partner, child, parent, or grandparent you could sponsor, and no relatives who are Canadian citizens or PRs, you may be able to sponsor one other relative. This category is very limited, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it fits.

Parents and Grandparents

If you have no living spouse, partner, child, parent, or grandparent you could sponsor, and no relatives who are Canadian citizens or PRs, you may be able to sponsor one other relative. This category is very limited, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it fits.

Sponsor Requirements

Status

You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or a person registered under Canada’s Indian Act. Permanent residents must live in Canada.

Age

You must be at least 18 years old.

Sponsorship Promise

You must sign a legal promise to support your family member. How long it lasts depends on who you sponsor:

  • Spouse or partner: 3 years
  • Dependent child: 10 years, or until the child turns 25, whichever comes first
  • Other eligible relatives: Usually 10 years

Financial Ability

There’s no minimum income to sponsor a spouse or dependent child in most cases. Some other categories require you to meet an income level.

No Sponsorship Bars

You may not be able to sponsor if you receive social assistance for reasons other than disability, owe money from a past sponsorship or immigration loan, are an undischarged bankrupt, have certain criminal convictions, or were sponsored as a spouse less than five years ago.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can I sponsor to Canada?

You can sponsor your spouse or partner, dependent children, and, in limited cases, orphaned relatives or one other relative. New parent and grandparent sponsorships are currently paused.

Not for PR right now. IRCC paused new Parents and Grandparents Program applications on July 15, 2026. Applications already submitted are still being processed. The Super Visa lets parents and grandparents visit for up to five years at a time.

Usually not, unless they’re orphaned, under 18, and not married, or you qualify under the limited “other relative” rule.

Only if they’ve depended on you financially since before age 22 because of a physical or mental condition.

It depends on the type of sponsorship and where your family lives. Spousal and child sponsorships often take a year or more. Check the IRCC website for current times.

Usually not, unless your dependent child has children of their own.

Yes. Permanent residents can sponsor eligible family members, but they must live in Canada while sponsoring.
